About this test

The Big Five personality test

The Big Five (often remembered as OCEAN) describes personality along five broad dimensions. Decades of research across many countries and cultures have found these five traits again and again, which is why most personality psychologists prefer this model over type-based systems.

The questions come from the International Personality Item Pool (IPIP), a public-domain collection of personality items, in the 50-item Big-Five Factor Markers form developed by psychologist Lewis R. Goldberg. You rate each statement from Disagree to Agree, based on how you are in general.

What you’ll learn

The five personality traits

Openness to experience

Curiosity, imagination and appetite for new ideas and experiences. Higher scorers tend to enjoy abstract thinking and variety. Lower scorers tend to prefer the practical and familiar.

Conscientiousness

Organisation, self-discipline and follow-through. Higher scorers plan ahead and like order. Lower scorers tend to be more spontaneous and flexible.

Extraversion

How much energy you draw from people, activity and attention. Higher scorers are typically outgoing and talkative. Lower scorers tend to be more reserved and recharge alone.

Agreeableness

Warmth, trust and concern for other people’s feelings. Higher scorers are cooperative and considerate. Lower scorers tend to be more direct and sceptical.

Neuroticism

How strongly and how often you feel stress, worry and low mood. Higher scorers are more emotionally sensitive. Lower scorers tend to stay calm and even-keeled.

How your personality test is scored

Each trait is measured by 10 statements rated from 1 to 5. Negatively worded statements, such as “I don’t talk a lot”, are reverse-scored so that a higher number always means more of the trait. Each trait total is then shown on a 0–100 scale. Below 40 is shown as lower, 40 to 60 as balanced and above 60 as higher.

Your bars show where you sit on the scale itself. They are not percentiles, so they don’t compare you with other people. Every position has strengths and costs, and none is better or worse than another.

This test is for self-understanding. It is not a clinical assessment and does not diagnose any condition or personality disorder.

FAQ

Personality test: common questions

Is the Big Five a scientifically valid personality test?

The Big Five is the most widely researched model in personality psychology, and its five traits have been found consistently across many studies and cultures. This test uses the 50-item IPIP Big-Five Factor Markers, a well-known research measure. As a short online version it gives a good general picture, not a precise clinical measurement.

How is the Big Five different from MBTI or the 16 personality types?

Type-based tests sort people into categories. The Big Five instead measures where you fall along five continuous scales, which reflects how personality actually varies. Most researchers consider it better supported by evidence than type-based systems.

Is there a good or bad personality result?

No. Every position on every trait has strengths and costs, depending on the situation. For example, high conscientiousness can bring reliability and also perfectionism, and low extraversion can bring depth and also fatigue in crowds.

Can my personality change?

Personality traits tend to stay fairly stable through adult life, but they do shift gradually, and how you act on them can change a lot. Therapy, experience and deliberate habit change can all affect how your traits show up day to day.

Does this test diagnose a personality disorder?

No. It describes normal variation in personality and is not a clinical assessment. If you are worried about how you think, feel or relate to others, a conversation with a qualified mental health professional is the right route.

Is the personality test free and confidential?

Yes. There is no payment, sign-up or email address needed. Your answers are scored in your own browser and we don’t store or share them. Your result is kept only in your browser tab for as long as you have it open, so you can download your PDF report before closing it.

Why might my result be different next time?

Your mood, stress level and what you have been doing lately can all colour how you rate yourself, and a short test has some natural variation. Answer as you are in general rather than how you feel today, and treat small differences as noise.

How can therapy use my personality results?

Knowing your tendencies can make therapy more targeted. For example, noticing that you are highly sensitive to stress, or that you put others first almost every time, gives you and your therapist something concrete to work with. You can book a free 15-minute call to talk about what you would like to understand better.
